This latest addition to the #FlushSmart campaign aims to educate consumers on best disposal practices for their favorite at-home beauty products.
Seattle, Wash. (Mar. 29, 2022) – Today the Responsible Flushing Alliance (RFA) released a new #FlushSmart infographic as part of its consumer education campaign raising awareness of the “Do Not Flush” label, coming in July 2022. This new infographic educates consumers on how to properly dispose of household beauty products and makeup wipes while avoiding costly clogs and negative environmental impacts.
This education campaign comes at a critical time as the Alliance and its members are brought under compliance with California state law AB 818. The infographic release tees up conversations ahead of April 7th, World Health Day, a day when many beauty brands remind consumers to invest in the self-care their health deserves – closely followed by Earth Day on April 22nd. The infographic helps honor consumer’s beauty and skin care needs while also educating them about the proper disposal of single-use products.
“We’re proud to bring top manufacturers and wastewater leaders together to combat dangerous, avoidable clogs in public sewer systems. Our collaborative cohort is focused on empowering consumers to care for their skin’s health and beauty needs, while also protecting the health of our planet and public infrastructure,” said Lara Wyss, President of the Responsible Flushing Alliance. “We are working together to create an informed public who always knows and practices what products goes where when disposing,”
The recent infographic is just the latest educational effort by the Responsible Flushing Alliance in alignment with the broader #FlushSmart campaign. With the support of top manufacturing and wastewater leaders, RFA regularly publishes educational materials including blogs, printable activity pages, and thought-provoking infographics to inform consumers about how to improve their flushing habits for the betterment of their overall health, community sewer systems, and environmental wellbeing.
Non-flushable items such as baby wipes, cleaning wipes, and other disposable wipes have been disposed of improperly for years, requiring significant monetary investment by homeowners and municipalities to manage severe sewer clogs, which can lead to sewage overflow into streets and homes. With the COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting toilet paper shortages, there has been a significant increase in people flushing non-flushable items such as cleaning wipes down toilets.
Knowing the havoc these clogs can wreak on homes and sewer systems, the Responsible Flushing Alliance is leading education and outreach programs, backed by industry and municipal leaders, that will be launched in accordance with California House Bill 818.
